After completing her BA (Hons.) in Ceramics at the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff, Virginia was awarded a setting up grant for crafts people in 2001, by the Arts Council of Wales.
Virginia’s ceramics are curiously British, eccentric creations that are far removed from the purely functional. A collection of tea wares, vases and vessels inspired by a bygone era. Combining florals with stripes and spots, feathers with taps and keys to create a look that is modern, unique and nostalgic.
‘Everyone has objects and possessions that they are passionate about and value most highly. My attention is drawn to the collector who consciously hoards objects. I make teapots and tea services because they are the ultimate in collectable ceramics, they are also ordinary objects that are instantly recognisable to the onlooker. I am fascinated by the way in which these objects, that were originally intended for use, are often collected and displayed behind glass never to be used for fear of betraying their new found status.’ |
