‘I have been playing with clay, glaze and fire in various ways for over 60 years and have been enthusiastically concentrating on oblong plates for the last 16. Plates incorporate ceramics with my interests in drawing, painting and decoration.
The decoration is realised by using paper shapes to resist layers of coloured slips. Some plates have as many as 10 layers of slip brushed on, plus fusible pigments under and over the glaze.
I am not alone in finding in fish a world of intriguing natural history and a wealth of attractive shapes, textures and colour.’
Frank was a full time lecturer for 30 years before retiring in 1982 to concentrate on ceramics. He regularly writes and is co-author with Janet of magazine articles and the ‘Potter’s Dictionary of Materials and Techniques’ (A&C Black), now in its 5th edition. Frank was also a founder member of the South Wales Potters’ Society. |
