Edla specialises in unique hand-built ceramics which are functional. She uses an earthenware clay which is then decorated with a variety of coloured slips and glazes.
The decoration is different each time, and also the form. This is in some way due to the nature of the making process which is coil and slab building. Form and decoration are very important to Edla with influences and inspirations for both, coming from a wide range of sources. She likes to collage ideas from her own environment such as foliage, birds and interiors with external imagery from museums, exhibitions and surroundings seen whilst travelling. Edla sees both her research sketch books and her pots as a diary entry of what she has been looking at, or of where she has been.
Edla studied at The Royal College of Art (MA 1993-95), St. Martins (London, Illustration 1991-93) and Camberwell College of Art (London, BA 1988-91). She has exhibited widely including the V&A and Crafts Council. |
